New treatment may use body's immune system to attack brain tumors

Researchers at Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University have developed a new procedure to fight glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) tumors - the kind of tumor Anne was diagnosed with.

The new treatment, developed in conjunction with John Hopkins and and produced by Pfizer, is a sort of vaccine called CDX-110. It doesn't prevent the disease, but it does trigger the immune system to attack cancerous cells that have a specific protein found in about 40% of GBM patients.

The advantage to this sort of treatment over radiation is that it more precisely targets cancer cells rather than hurting all dividing cells around the tumor.
